What's Happening: Success Stories ~ May 2007

Welcome to the Carver Agricultural Commission and the Carver Farmer's Market

The historic, small town of Carver has a lot to be proud of, historic landmarks, creative and fun family attractions, small town appeal, friendly neighbors and a hands-on Agricultural Commission.

In January 2005, the Town of Carver passed their Warrant Article for an AgCom.  Since then, members of the AgCom have worked diligently to sustain the town’s rural character, preserve our agricultural roots and encourage the pursuit of agricultural based businesses in town.  June 2006 saw the birth of Carver’s first Farmers Market nestled in the pines at Shurtleff Park in the center of town.  This was a collaborative effort by town planner Jack Hunter, Agriculture Commission chairman Dick Ward, and AgCom member Mike Nash.  The market’s mission was to promote agriculture, thus preserving the agricultural character of the town while giving the local small farmers and growers visibility and a new retail market. In short, it was a way of connecting the agricultural community with the rest of the town. From the very beginning the market received strong support from the town and AgCom members who took turns volunteering their time each week. Under the guidance of market manager Mike Nash, as many as 42 vendors participated throughout the 21 week market season selling locally grown fresh vegetables, fruits, eggs, honey, jams and jellies, baked goods, buffalo meat, live lobsters, plants and flowers, herbs, handmade crafts, and in the fall cranberries, mums, cornstalks, pumpkins and gourds.

Each week live musicians entertained while patrons, who recognized the value and quality of the market's wares, gathered in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere, which went a long way in fostering a real spirit of community. For many it became a social event and they looked forward to the weekly market.  Although Mother Nature wasn't always kind, raining on a number of Sundays, the market prevailed. If 2006 is any indication, the Farmers Market is well on its way to becoming a hometown institution for years to come.

The Carver AgCom’s vision and perseverance united a community in celebration of agriculture and hometown pride.  Now that’s a success!
